The cuckoo operates automatically on a cycle: 16 hours of chiming and 8 hours of silence. To keep it quiet at night, insert the batteries keeping in mind that the silent period will begin 16 hours later. For example, if you insert the batteries at 7:45 AM, it will chime until 11 PM, then stay silent until 8 AM.
